How to Clean Your Red Wing Boots in the Winter

Fall is easily the best time of year to work outdoors in Central Virginia. The summer humidity has broken, the mornings are crisp, and the leaves are coming down. But as any tradesperson in Richmond knows, these clear October days are just a short bridge to wet November rains, damp morning frost, and the first winter slush.

If you want your boots to keep your feet dry and warm when the freezing weather hits, the work starts right now.

Four generations in the shoe business have taught our family one fundamental truth: leather care is preventative maintenance. Waiting until January, when road brine and mud have already soaked into the hide, is how good boots end up cracked, stiff, and leaking. Taking 20 minutes on a Sunday afternoon to clean, condition, and protect your boots ensures the leather remains supple, resilient, and ready for whatever a Virginia winter throws at your job site.

The Fall Guide to Cleaning and Protecting Your Red Wings

Here is the three-step routine we recommend to winterize your leather before the cold sets in.

Step 1: Clean (Strip Away the Job Site Grit)

Leather is skin, and its pores need to breathe. Over the summer and early fall, fine concrete dust, sawdust, and dried Richmond red clay lodge themselves in the grain and along the welt stitching. Left untreated, that grit acts like liquid sandpaper every time your boot flexes.

  • Pull the Laces: Never clean boots with the laces on. You need full access to the tongue and gusset where dirt and moisture love to hide.
  • Dry Brush First: Use a medium-to-stiff horsehair brush to knock off caked-on dirt, dried mud, and loose debris.
  • Targeted Wash: Dampen a clean cloth with warm water or use Red Wing Foam Leather Cleaner. Work the foam into the leather using small circular motions to lift deep-seated oils and grime without saturating the hide.
  • For Roughout or Nubuck: Skip the water. Use a specialized suede/nubuck brush and cleaner bar to lift the nap and erase scuffs.

Step 2: Condition (Replenish the Natural Oils)

Cleaning removes dirt, but it also strips away surface oils. If you skip conditioning, the dry fall air will cause the leather fibers to tighten, dry out, and eventually split. Applying the right conditioner restores flexibility, depth of color, and natural water repellency.

  • Match the Product to Your Leather:
    • Heavy-Duty Work Leathers: Use Red Wing All Natural Boot Oil or Mink Oil Paste. These penetrate deep into thick, oil-tanned hides to maximize water resistance on active job sites.
    • Heritage & Finished Leathers: If you’re wearing classic styles like the Iron Ranger or Moc Toe off the clock, use Leather Cream (Neatsfoot oil blend). It nourishes the hide without heavily darkening the original finish.
  • Apply Sparingly: A little goes a long way. Work the conditioner into the leather with a soft rag, paying extra attention to the flex points behind the toe box and along the seams.
  • Let It Rest & Buff: Allow the conditioner to absorb for at least an hour (overnight is even better). Afterward, take a soft horsehair brush and briskly buff the surface to remove excess oil and bring back a clean, natural sheen.

Step 3: Protect (Lock Out the Coming Wet Weather)

Once the leather is clean and properly nourished, you need an invisible barrier against moisture, mud, and early-season chemical treatments.

  • The Shield: Grab a can of Red Wing Leather Protector.
  • Application: Hold the can about 8 to 12 inches away and apply an even, light mist over the entire boot, including the welt stitching and tongue.
  • Cure Time: Let them dry naturally at room temperature.

This breathable shield prevents water from soaking into the outer fibers without choking the leather or trapping interior perspiration.
