The No-Nonsense Guide to Breaking In Your New Boots

The No-Nonsense Guide to Breaking In Your New Boots

When you buy a new pair of full-grain Red Wings, you’re getting leather made to last through years of tough work. Getting that perfect, custom fit takes some time, though. After four generations of fitting workers in Richmond, we’ve heard every break-in trick out there. Still, the best way to care for your feet is to do it right.

Avoid Shortcuts. Your Leather Will Thank You

Over the years at our Brook Road, Chester, and Midlothian stores, we’ve seen many boots ruined by bad advice. Before you try any home remedies, watch out for these common mistakes:

  • Don’t Soak Them in Water: If you dunk your boots and wear them while they dry, the leather can stretch out of shape and lose its natural oils. This leaves the leather brittle.
  • Keep Them Away from Heat: Never use a hairdryer, oven, or heater to try to soften the leather. High heat can shrink the natural fibers and damage the stitching.
  • Hold Off on Heavy Oiling: Pouring too much oil on new leather can break down the boot’s support before it has a chance to shape to your foot.

The Four-Step Break-In Routine

Start with the Right Fit

A brutal break-in is usually just a bad fit. When you step into our stores, we use 3D volumetric scanning to match your heel width, arch height, and instep. If the boot flexes where your foot naturally bends, half the break-in work is already done.

Wear Merino Wool Socks

Skip the cheap cotton. Good Merino wool work socks cushion your heels and ankles, and they pull sweat away from your skin. This helps prevent hot spots as the leather shapes to your foot.

Use a Gradual Wear Schedule

Don’t start with a 12-hour shift right away. Wear your new boots for two or three hours, then switch back to your old pair. Add an hour or two each day. In a week or two, the leather will move naturally with your step.

Bring Them in for Your First Monthly Service

After you’ve worn your boots for a few weeks, bring them back to us. Our free monthly service includes a light, professional conditioning to keep the leather soft and supportive.

Need Help Getting Started?
